It’s very fitting that I would start a brand new blog today, along with a brand new year! I turned 19 today and had a LOT of fun.
I never dreamed that, by September, I would have the sort of friends who send me singing voice mails and make signs for my dorm room door. I definitely did NOT think I would be getting any gifts…but, thankfully, I thought wrong!

This week has been full of surprises, last minute meetings, changes is schedule, assignments out of nowhere, etc. It marks the end of the busiest two weeks I have had in a very long time. And, considering this was just the beginning of the semester, who knows what I have in store for me!
Through all the chaos one thing I am very passionate about has remained consistently peaceful. About a year ago a non-profit organization, Full Hearts Foundation, was started here at Texas A&M through the Fellows program in the business school. It was the product of a regular trip that the rugby team here had been making a couple of times a year to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The foundation was started primarily as a fund-raising project to help out with an all-girls orphanage that many involved felt like was an inspiration to the community. As those involved with its creation became more involved, the project grew to be much more. (more…)

I consider myself to be an open minded person. I usually seek out the good in people and attempt to see the world from another point of view, or at least put forth the effort to understand where they are coming from, and how their circumstances might influence what they say/believe. I feel this is the only way we can really get at what we are all seeking, the truth. And not in the preachy, Halo-topped way, but the raw, honest, ugly truth. (more…)

Distractions. For a college student, distractions are EVERYWHERE. For me, last week was no exception. Yet again, I find myself staying up way too late working on a project I should have finished (wait, started) a week ago. Well, let’s start with the good distraction.
I finally have it—the thing that I have been waiting for since I came to Aggieland—no, not my diploma, my Fightin’ Texas Aggie Ring! WHOOP!! (more…)

It is completely possible to study in a library for eight hours straight.
And highly recommended prior to a Finance Exam!
Thus far in Finance 341, I have learned a whole lot. I am proud to say that I now know buzz words such as “mutual fund” and “money market.” I realize the effect of expected inflation on the required return rate on long term bonds. I understand what “the Dow Jones went up today” means and I can even tell you what DRP stands for.
That’s Default Risk Premium, and it can only be applied to corporate securities, because the United States Treasury will never miss a payment.
However, learning about a subject will do you little good on a test. It is more important to learn how to take the test. (more…)

Howdy folks! Hope everybody’s weekend was great and full of fun. My week was…definitely interesting.
So first, the bad news. A year and a half ago, my dentist told me, “Hey, you should probably get all four wisdom teeth out pretty soon.” Of course, there was never a convenient time, so I kept putting it off. However, last Sunday I discovered I had an impacted wisdom tooth (JOY!). Here’s a tip—listen to your dentist! If she says you need your teeth out, get them out ASAP. Going through classes on pain pills is not the best way to get ahead in school, kiddos. (more…)

Twenty years old, and I don’t know my way around a kitchen.
That’s right, I’m a full-fledged, card-carrying member of the generation whose sustenance emerges from a microwave, drive-thru window or pre-packaged container.
… and I’m living with a gang of Betty Crockers.
I have been blessed with three incredible roommates. They cook, they clean, they are considerate, thoughtful, understanding… and they’re enlightening my inner Emeril. (more…)

I feel that for my first blog, I should give some background as to my personal life and what got me to Texas A&M. In the beginning, it seemed to me that my story was very out of the ordinary, but as I have met many people through various organizations, classes, and my program, I have become increasingly aware of the diverse backgrounds of students coming to Texas A&M.
I grew up in a household with a single mother and one brother. Due to hardships, a failed marriage, and a lack of education, it was very difficult for my mother to provide an upbringing for my brother and me. I spent most of my childhood trying to figure out why all of my friends lived in a bigger house, had fancier toys, and went on these things called vacations. I knew that they seemed very happy and I wanted the same. (more…)

Howdy folks!
So I am going to be a writer! Hooray! It’s like the whole world is now my audience…or just those of you who check my blog page. Anyhoo, as you probably have picked up, my name is Erika. What you probably have NOT picked up (unless you are a telekinetic cybernetic super cool person from the future) is that I have a super cute Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy named Luka and a fabulous fiancé named Andrew. When I’m not chasing tennis balls and house-training the ball of fur, I am studying at Mays Business School, working on my degree in management. I also am in the process of completing my certificate in International Business and my minor in History. I’m class of ‘09 (WHOOP!), but I am most likely going to graduate in December of 2008, right before I tie the knot—kind of terrifying, but really exciting! (more…)

Yesterday was a busy day.
Actually, the day before that was a busy day.
In fact, everyday has been a busy day… and looking ahead on my calendar, it is only going to get busier. (more…)
