And the delegate is…

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This week I had the amazing chance to be a part of America’s democracy in action. I was honored to be one of the Obama delegates at the Brazos County Democratic Convention this Saturday representing Precinct 26. Although it meant spending an entire Saturday in an elementary school gym following Robert’s rules of order, it was completely worth every second.

Should I stay or should I go now?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Well, I’m back in the d-f-dub sooner than I expected. A dear friend of mine’s dad passed away, so being here became instantly more important than anything else I could’ve been doing.

Sitting at the funeral home was a lesson in community history. My friend’s mom is actually my mom’s best friend from childhood, so it’s only natural that she’d have Richard and my mom would have me within six days’ time. He was my first kiss at one, my fellow explorer in the pasture behind our baby sitter’s house before we started school, my six year old traveling companion to Disney World (and all the Six Flags theme parks later), my fellow sufferer at LBJ Ranch when our moms took to educating us on our nation’s history, my date to the 10th grade homecoming dance and a friend throughout it all– and all because our grandparents happened to buy houses across the street from each other.

Spring Break 2KGreat: The Ending

BALTIMORE

Arriving in Baltimore, I meet up with Daniel and Andrew at Baggage Claim, and proceed to catch a taxi. As soon as we load our bags in the back of the cab, the monstrous Russian driver asks us “Where to?”

“Cherry Hill” Andrew responds.

The giant’s eyes widen as he shakes his head and says “I don’t go to Cherry Hill, and neither should you.”

Jace, a recent graduate of the PPA and Business Honors programs resisted the corporate lifestyle by dedicating two years to Teach For America at one of the toughest schools in the United States. Daniel and Andrew had visited him before and knew what to expect; I however, was not accustomed. (more…)

Good Friday, Better Monday

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Here’s what’s going on in my world. I just got home from Dallas, where I spent Easter with my family going to church, being doted on by little, old, blue-haired ladies and eating an incredible home-cooked meal with some extended family in the mix. I stayed in town on Good Friday, originally to get some schoolwork done, but eventually to help with Project Mays with some Business Student Council friends who have a vision of providing at least $25,000 worth of school supplies to kids in need in Bryan ISD. Spring Break 2KGreat: The Beginning

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Ahh spring break… the chance to relax, take a load off and get caught up with everything going on in your life.

Ha. If you think that’s what I did, then you probably don’t know me very well.

I tend to find that for any extended period of time (in excess of five days) school-free, I’m off someplace away, and spring break was no exception. Let’s recap some of those adventures…

Spring (Not-so) Break

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

You would think that a “spring break” would do what the title suggests…give you a break. Not for me! I’m still tired from my “break,” catching naps when I can and frantically attempting to get myself back in school mode. That being said, I had so much fun over the break, and I hope ya’ll did too.

I spent my break in the Big Apple, one of my many future homes. Last year, I was part of Fellows Group XXV and went on the annual New York trip. This year, I was privileged to tag along with the Fellows Group XXVI, who are a fantastic group of people, by the way, due to some work I had done with the book How. Like last year, I visited several amazing companies and met some of the top business leaders of today and saw some great Broadway shows (see below for exciting details!). (more…)

Spring Break In Mexico

Monday, March 17th, 2008

I know what most would think….Cancun, Cozumel, partying, nice beaches, and the rest. But, as most of those who know me could have easily guessed, I spent this spring break just like the last one in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. This spring break was the one year anniversary of my first time there, and it just keeps getting better. Although there are no beaches, no posh restaurants, no booze cruises or snorkeling, there are amazing people and places that continue to make my time there more and more special. (more…)

Dart Night

Monday, March 17th, 2008

This post is going to take quite a bit of set up for one major point. The point though, is one that I feel is very important. I feel it is important maybe because it is something I learned later than I would have liked, or maybe because it is something that most people never learn and would be much better off if they would.

Anyways, for 4 years now I have been playing in a “Dart League” at NorthGate. It sounds very strange, I know, but it has been a lot of fun. It’s a team thing, so I am committed and cannot flake out. To me it’s basically mandatory fun and relaxation for a couple of hours in the middle of the week that keeps me sane for the end. In this league, it is meant to be fun for everyone, even the people who are beginners and are not very good. There are certain courtesy rules that are unwritten, but that everyone plays by. These rules, if followed, keep anyone from being completely embarrassed and narrows the field a bit. (more…)

It IS a small world after all

Monday, March 17th, 2008

I went to Mexico with Full Hearts last week on a whim–met Jon and then some, after a lengthy car ride or two–and a string of events made me realize how closely the people and circumstances in my life have been bound together throughout.

Last semester, I had this intense idea for a leadership retreat that wouldn’t let me study, talk, or write about anything until I hashed out its details. (more…)

Texas Ambassador

Monday, March 10th, 2008

In my bedroom in the corner of my house in College Station, Texas, there is a plaque that hangs on the wall between a map of the world and painting of the Sistine Chapel that reads “Life is less about where you’ve been, and more about where you’re going.” Equipped with an artist’s imagination and an explorer’s heart, living the entire twenty years of my life within a 150 mile radius intensifies my curiosity abroad, but it would be absurd to ignore where I came from. In my mind, I have long considered myself to be a Texas Ambassador. I am well aware of the stereotypes and less than favorable perception of some of my Lone Star comrades, instigating my own personal mission to clear up the nonsense. (more…)
