More Lindyhop! with Chipotle on the Side…

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

So you know how last week I had this amazing weekend in Munich, spending most of my time swing dancing? Well, this weekend I did the SAME THING…only in Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Lindy Exchange! This year marked the first time Edinburgh hosted a lindy exchange, and I think it’s fair to say it went off extraordinarily well. Three amazing things happened to me during ELX:

1. I got to swing dance with a man in a kilt.

2. A local dancer called me an “Edinburgh dancer.”

3. I introduced myself to a guy I was dancing with, and his response was, “Oh, you’re the Erika from America who is getting into our Edinburgh lindy scene but really prefers to blues dance?—Oh yes, the Edinburgh dancers are talking about you.”

It was an excellent weekend. (more…)

Greetings from Austin

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I hate to be a bad Aggie, but I did miss this weekend’s game to go to Austin.
However, it was a special circumstance … AUSTIN CITY LIMITS ! (A 3 day fest of fabulous music.) Which, I figured I well deserved, after my long and rough week of tests and all nighters.

Aggieland at its Best

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Well, I made it through the first round of tests.   I am still here, but must say it was quite a grind.  Monday and Tuesday, I spent close to fourteen hours in the library preparing for what might be thrown my way.  I will say I was not the only one putting my time in wisely.  It was obvious that it was test week for everyone.  Both nights it was a packed house in the West Campus Library well past midnight.  It is a great sight to see everyone putting all other things aside to focus on what’s most important and what we are all here for, our education.  (more…)

Gig ‘em Eagles

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

This weekend I got to go home for the first time this school year. Well, not technically home. I guess I should give some quick background information. I grew up in a really small town in East Texas called Rusk. The town has about 5,000 people and I graduated in a class of 131. About three weeks before I started college, my family moved to College Station. So when presented with the opportunity to go “home” I took it. (more…)

Of all the trees in the forest, you had to uproot this one

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

A concept that has come up quite a bit recently is the idea of being able to discern the tress from the forest, and then being able to take in the forest as a whole. Whether it is in International Business or my independent research on the choreographic process, this phrase leads me to believe that honing this skill, of being able to study the tiny details and the big picture simultaneously, is what my education is about. I also believe this is what my own self discovery is about.

I often feel a certain disconnect to the many aspects of me. Even down to my personality, I am very much Type A and Type B at the same time. Sometimes I feel as though the only person who really knows me is me; and I don’t even feel like I know myself that well. (more…)

“Here at ______, People Matter Most.”-Career Fair

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Talking to recruiters has been a lot of fun during this Career Fair.  Not intending to go internship-hunting until Thursday, I suited up yesterday morning to help set up booths, then dressed up last night to go to Networking Night at the Hilton.  I got a laugh out of how much changes in a year; a freshman sat down next to me and I could just feel his nerves as he calculated just how firm to make his handshake, what order to introduce himself to people at the table and whether to call the recruiter Mr. So-and-So or by his first name.  I remember the feeling well.  :) (more…)

Erika’s Excellent European Escapade

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

I’m having some trouble keeping up with all the amazing things happening in my life right now. I only moved to Edinburgh a fortnight ago, and I’m already diving into the European lifestyle of traveling, working, and public transportation. Last Wednesday, I left my new home for a five day foray into Germany for a little event known as the Munich Lindy Exchange and Oktoberfest. I traveled to Munich for amazing swing dancing and Bavarian culture shock, only to come back to Edinburgh late Sunday night and begin my classes for the new term.

Here’s how it went down. (more…)

As Crunch Time Approaches

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

The weekend before several tests, I decided to take my first trip back home to Lufkin since moving here nearly six weeks ago.  I had wanted to go home several times, but as you know certain things had put a damper on my plans.  Well, I was finally able to go, and It was a great weekend.  Although I did not do much out of the ordinary, just the simple fact of being comfortable at “home” made it worth while.  My weekend was full of great home-cooked meals, a couple good night’s sleep, and hard work with my dad to clean up after Ike.  (more…)

Aggie Ring Day

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

While attending Texas A&M, students work diligently and slowly count the days until that “special” day. In most colleges that day would be graduation, but of course A&M is different. We look forward to a day that comes before graduation, but seems to take a lot longer; I am talking about the day you receive your Aggie ring. (more…)

Another Link in the Chain

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Welcome to the club.

This weekend, I joined thousands of other Aggies in the tried and true tradition of receiving my Aggie Ring.

To be quite honest, the days prior to this momentous occasion, I was not excited. In a way I was surprised at my lack of enthusiasm, considering this ring was something I had been working towards not just since I began college, but since I was a young child and put on my parent’s rings. I was never in any rush to get it. I have the same mentality towards my Aggie ring as I do towards an engagement/wedding ring; once you get it, you have it for the rest of your life- don’t rush receiving it, instead enjoy the time it takes to earn it.

I've got some time to wear mine down

For this reason, I almost dreaded getting my ring for some years, meaning that my time was almost over. However, now that I’m here, I realize this is not an upsetting thing. The time is almost right, and Aggieland has done her job in preparing you. (more…)
