Christmas away from home

Friday, December 26th, 2008

This is the first time I’ve spent Christmas outside the United States.
Usually, my family and I will have a big Christmas dinner with some family friends AND some turkey, ham … the works. We get to open one present early on Christmas eve and then we will wake up the next morning to open the rest.
This year, I spent Christmas in Penang (Georgetown), Malaysia. It is a little island off the coast of the peninsula of Malaysia. This place feels like a tropical Mexican summer. The weather here is humid and in the 90s. Every so often there will be a sea breeze and the locals here are all tan and eat spicy food. No pine trees, just palm trees. (more…)

No Place Like Home

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I thought once school ended, I would have so much free time on my hands that procrastinating wouldn’t be an option.  Here I am writing a week later than normal.  The break has been good to me so far.  When I say good, I mean relaxing, but not very productive.  This past week has consisted of duck hunting, squirrel hunting, deer hunting, working out, and lots of sleep.  The home-cooked meals have been great after having to fend for myself since August when it came to what I ate. Aggieland a.k.a College Station

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

There are only three valuable shopping days left until Christmas, so there are tons of people shopping. If you’re like me, you still have to buy half of your Christmas presents. Did you know that outside of A&M University there is a town named College Station? It’s true, if you venture outside of the A&M walls you will find yourself in a town that seems like a whole different world. No, I’m not crazy. I’ve known it’s there the whole time, I just didn’t realize there were so many people. (more…)

Global Warming?

Monday, December 15th, 2008

College Station weather is unpredictable. Usually you hear this when someone is talking about the rain, but that of course was not the case this week. For those of you who don’t know Texas weather, in the summer it’s very hot, and in the winter it’s just as cold. On Wednesday there was a strange occurrence in which white, fluffy objects precipitated from the sky; it was snowing in Aggieland! (more…)

Hey, so, um, would you wanna, um, I dunno… hang out sometime?

You have to have goals; big ones, small ones, fun ones and everything in between. At least I have to- it’s the force that disrupts my inertia and makes my life existentially exciting. Alas, I have sort of been in ‘goal-limbo’ for a while this semester, waiting for something to come up. I knew that before I graduated college, I wanted to go to Colorado and learn how to snowboard. Check. Next was going to see my Nation’s capital. Check. The months that followed were so exciting- Vegas for my twenty-first birthday, Europe all summer- and life happened so fast that I didn’t have the time to formulate and search my heart for the next fun goal. I determined that I need to go to Savannah, Georgia, but there was no immediate urgency in that goal, and I needed something a tad bit more realistic and attainable, yet still challenging. (more…)

Going Out With a Bang

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

The semester has come to an end, and you would know it couldn’t just end peacefully.  After going through the week on little sleep, I got the least last night.  I woke up at four this morning to try to squeeze in that last bit before my last final.  On my way to school, I drove through sleet the entire way.  By the time I reached school and got out of my truck, snow had begun to fall.  I knew the semester would have some sort of a crazy end to it. Done !

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I just took my last final of the semester and I could not feel more relieved. It is almost like a big massive weight have been lifted off of me. I hope all those hours in the library, not sleeping and having very very crazy hair has paid off.  On a side note, I did find my brand new study spot. The vet / medical library on west campus. It is right by Wehner and just like WCL (minus the crowds of people freaking out over the same test). Relaxing + comfy chairs = perfect study spot! (more…)

Procrastinators’ Meeting Moved to Tomorrow

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Over the Thanksgiving break I had nine chapters left to read before my final exams. In order to get caught up, I brought my textbooks, spirals, and pencils home with the intention of reading over the break. As soon as I got home, I greeted my family and put my backpack down in a corner. Five days later I said goodbye to my family, and retrieved my backpack from the same corner; I didn’t read a single chapter. (more…)

Floating on Pink Cotton Candy Clouds

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Recently I tore through the pages of The Game; Penetrating the Secret Society of Pick-Up Artists by Neil Strauss. Without getting into too much detail (it is humorous, enjoyable, and well written) I couldn’t seem to put the book down, partly because of the internal conflict I had with the situation going on. Most of my life has been spent around guys, and I consider myself pretty understanding of the opposite sex, however I realized that The Game wasn’t about or for women at all… it’s the most Boy Power book I’ve ever read.

But this semester has been all about Girl Power. It’s as if I have re-discovered the World of Women. Whether de-toxing the troubles of the day with my roommates, calling in for re-enforcements and honest opinions in the dressing room, eating cookies while watching Love Actually, or talking with my best friend about things that only best friends can talk about, I have really strengthened my bonds with the caring and empowering women in my life. And I’ve never been so happy! That is really odd to say… (more…)
