What do bagels and HRD have in common?–Me!

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Okay, now that the combination of jet lag and epic dancing has worn off, have I got a story for you, Ags!

Last Thursday, I made my ninth cross-Atlantic flight from Edinburgh to Washington, D.C. As amazing as it would have been just to fly to our nation’s capital, I actually was flying with a purpose. Over a year ago, I started doing some research with Dr. Roemer Visser and Dr. Lesley Tomaszewski, examining whether or not gender based differences in peer performance appraisals existed. After a TON of work, we submitted a research abstract to the Academy of Human Resource Development for their 2009 International Research Conference in The Americas, and it was accepted! We had submitted our work before I left for Scotland, so I had no idea what would happen if our work was positively reviewed, but I was fortunate enough to be sponsored to fly all the way from Scotland to help present our work to other human resource development professors, graduate students, and professionals.

Good Morning, College Station!

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

At 5:34 this morning, I opened my front door to 8 people pushing their way into my house.  After the usual round of compliments–”Oh, this is the cutest house I’ve ever seen!”  “Oh, I love your decorations!” “Oh, this is so YOU!”–I looked around and realized that I didn’t know 3 middle aged people who had somehow worked their way into the bunch.  After ushering the eager strangers out and accepting two dollars for a machine that makes nature sounds, I greeted a mix of friends and acquaintances for a morning of hard work. I’m a Big Girl… but that doesn’t mean I don’t get “little kid sick”

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Remember those good ole days of yesteryear? When you got sick and you weren’t just under the weather, you were completely incapacitated? When you literally could not care for yourself, because the sickness was too much for your small frame to handle?

Oh, I remember them fondly… because it was only a few days ago.

I describe it as being “little kid sick.” “Big kid sick” is just an annoyance; you do not feel well, but you are at least able to function. Although thinking and working is difficult, you don’t feel SO bad that you cannot do it… at the very least, you feel guilty. But there is nothing you can do about it, except grunt through it and try and rest.

But “little kid sick” is a whole different story. You literally cannot think about anything other than feeling better. You have lost control of common bodily functions. You don’t even feel bad about not doing anything…because you physically can’t. (more…)

Play Ball

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Baseball is said to be America’s pastime. I like to play baseball, but I can honestly say that I have never seen a whole game on TV or in person. In fact, I’ve never been to a baseball game. Friday was the Aggie baseball team’s season opener. We are currently ranked number one in the nation. All of my friends were going, so of course I had to go. (more…)

All about careers

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

This past week has been all about careers.

First off, there was the Business Career Fair that I had to help out with. However, due with the economic downfall there were fewer companies than usual. In addition, many of the companies just didn’t have that many job or internship opportunities available. I’m moderately concerned about how the economy will be whenever I graduate. Overall, depressing. But since I helped out, I got some food and beverage benefits. Unlimited McCallister’s sweet tea and apple juice. Hydration … yum! (more…)

Skip Valentine’s… it’s a Decathlon Day

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

In my opinion, Valentine’s Day is a silly holiday. Studying my fair share of marketing and business, I can usually see right through the advertisements and corporate urgings of chocolate manufacturers and retail stores. But who doesn’t like having an excuse to party? Most of my Valentines gone by were filled with candy, friends, cards, grape juice, gifts and flowers, but rarely a “special boy.” Personally, I think the holiday puts way too much pressure on young men to be ‘perfect’ when really everyone just ought to be themselves.

As the holiday lurched, inquiring minds kept asking what my plans were for Valentine’s Day with ‘Carrots’ and my reoccurring response was always candid- “I really don’t know.” It is not unusual for us to cook a homemade meal, drink wine and eat by candle light outside on my back porch… isn’t that what most people do for Valentine’s Day anyway?

Barely acknowledging the holiday, we took advantage of the Saturday to do many of the activities we have been talking about partaking in for quite some time. This evolved into a day-long decathlon… (more…)

The Choices You Make

Monday, February 16th, 2009

The choices we make in life are what determine the person that we are.  Over the last few months, I have focused on making better choices in all aspects of life.  Whether it be as simple as not going over to a friends house because I know that distracts me from what I need to get done, or just keeping my eyes focused on what really matters, I have really worked at being a better person.  After all, you only get one chance as this thing called life, and my primary focus is honor my Maker and have an impact on all those around me.  I want them to truly see how God works in my life and how many blessings He can rain upon you. In an open relationship with food

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I LOVE FOOD and FOOD LOVES ME. Thus, I will dedicate this entire entry to food in College Station.

One of my favorite places is La Bodega by North Gate. I take all my friends from out of town there for brunch. They have awesome and abnormally big breakfast tacos and beignets. And for those who don’t know what beignets are … they originated from New Orleans. They have the wonderful pastrey-ness of a donut, but in a rectangular shape. On top, powdered sugar gets layered on by the inches. Deliciouso. (more…)

Growing Up

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I have finally come to the realization that I am getting old. On Saturday I was at home relaxing on the couch when my mom asked if anyone wanted to go to the store with her. Usually when she says this I run to the next room and hide, or I quickly volunteer my little brother so I won’t have to go. This time was different. I jumped off the couch and said sure because I needed milk, cereal, and a case of ramen noodles. (more…)

The Big 22…Really?

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Remember when you turned 16? For me, it was a magical number—all the Disney princesses were 16—plus, I could finally legally drive. 18 rolled around, the official age of adulthood, when I could legally sign myself in and out of school, sign release forms, or whatever else. 21…we all remember 21, the last big birthday of our youth, where all the strict guidelines of what we can and can’t legally do are lifted and we’re able to fully participate in all of society’s rules. Then comes 22.

I just turned 22, and for the first birthday ever, I didn’t feel any different on my birthday. (more…)
