This week I went to my cousin’s high school graduation. As I sat in the stands surrounded by family and friends, I became lost in thought. One of the graduating seniors took center stage and began to sing Time of Your Life. There is something about that song that brings upon unexpected flashbacks. The sea of blue caps and gowns in front of me began to blur and became a deep shade of red, the color of my alma mater. My own graduation, which seems ages ago, actually only took place last year. To get marketing 484 credit for my internship I have to get at least 300 total hours. It is suggested that it is 30 hours a week over a span of 10 weeks. I am going to be here for 10 weeks, however at the hours I am working … I think I am going to accumulate at least 600 hours. My first week alone, I will have 50 hours. (That includes me working on Sunday!)

Today I was interviewed by my friend Hannah at work, who is working on a paper for her May minimester Cognitive Development class for her Masters. The topic she has chosen to research is students that study abroad and what the impact of this experience is on their maturity.
I do not think I ever sat down and gave credit to the little experiences that have played in to my maturation, but in answering her questions today, I was forced to admit to myself that I have in fact changed, and in a very big way. (more…)

Today was my first day of my real full time internship.
It was almost like one of those milestones: first day of school, first day of college, first birthday, etc., but without the embarrassing pictures from parentals.
I woke up at 7am this morning and went into the office for my public relations internship at Sergio Rossi, an Italian shoe company than is within Gucci Group. I walked out of the office, as a wholesales intern at Yves Saint Laurent. Upon arrival, I was instantly directed to the shoe closet. There were rows of fabulous shoes and handbags, as a result there was tons of paperwork to fill out. Magazines, stylists, stores, etc. borrow the items for photo shoots or public events and the PR office has to make sure requests are filled and items are returned. I opened the book and the first name I saw was Anne Hathaway, so I got a little excited.

I have decided that in life I need rollover minutes. Right now I have so much free time I don’t know what to do with myself. This of course will not be the case in a week when my summer school classes start. If only I could keep this free time and use it throughout the year. I know where all of my minutes would go, too: finals week. (more…)

I officially moved into my new apartment today. It is located on the lower Upper West side.
The location is kind of funny to me, on one side there is Julliard and the Lincoln Center. Both are gorgeous and filled with posters of ballerinas and summer performances. On the other side, is something called Amsterdam Houses. Sounds cool right ? Sounds like you might want to visit?
Well, turns out Amsterdam Houses = government assisted living = the projects.
Well, you know what corner I will be avoiding during the night … (more…)

Pulling in to the parking lot at Sea World, the sun shining beautifully above us, Jon reminds me that they know we are going to be at the park today. They remembered me for my big, pink floppy hat when I got off the bus, before they even agreed to take us on. He reminded me that not all hope was lost, that we should just keep our eyes peeled and hats on. As I cut through the cars in the shortest possible route to the entrance, I inquired as to why Jon was taking the long way around, walking straight down the aisles. “Well, I remember they had Nebraska plates.”
Impressed by his genius and Hardy boy spirit, I join in as Nancy Drew in the search and in what seemed like no time at all, only a few rows over, we find the big white rental van with Nebraska plates, a Hyatt hotel hanging tag and a beach parking sticker in the front windshield that I happened to notice. Every single new position of leadership is overwhelming, even though I know team building formulas like “forming->storming->norming->conforming->performing”. Something about the polite, preliminary disagreements with the people who, two weeks prior, I was hugging and congratulating, just builds up perseverance…and a hope that the coming year will reflect the positive, productive, essential outcomes of conflict without the slightest residue of resentment.
I have such a fight-or-flight mind, and every time something gets hard something in me wants to jet. I revert to this mental storyline of moving back home, finishing out my college credits at an easier school than A&M, becoming a quietly ashamed hermit (because of all the dreams I’ve shared and haven’t reached), tucking my tail between my legs and backing down from the life I know I’m as capable as the next person to lead. This draw to cowardice is normal (probably a good sign, if I’m honest and not humble
, that I’m stretching my outermost limits), and I know I’m not the first person to have felt this way. Defining moments come, though, when there’s a big pile of stuff in front of me, yet I’m able to dig my heels in to face the fire, recycling would-be negative experiences to affect positive change.

I have 3 days left until I move to New York City for the summer.
Meaning, that I have an obnoxious amount of errands to do before I leave.
Right after finals ended, I went straight to Austin to attend a wedding for the weekend.
I haven’t had time to pack, much less time to even unpack. I’m using this as an excuse to procrastinate right now. I’m even using checking grades as another excuse to avoid packing.

Unable to determine whether or not we are hungry, we trek the entirety of the Riverwalk, considering all of our options, and in our completely indecisive and yet picky nature, agree to a place, only to find that it is closing. We head back to the Original, which is open 24 hours, where we shared two 32 oz. margaritas, one fresh fruit Strawberry and the other a Honey Dew melon flavor, enjoying the ducks and the people that passed by our candlelit table for two.
