Back in Manhattan

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I seem to have a routine down already: College Station to Houston to New York City
I usually have a time frame of 8 hours.
I stress and freak out in College Station and dump everything I own haphazardly into boxes, bags and luggage.
I drive home to Houston where and my mom and I do a load of laundry and pack until it is time to go to the airport.
Then I plane, train and taxi into Manhattan.

This round of interviews for internships went by much easier than it did past Spring. Before all I knew was that I wanted to work in fashion, but now I can define what divisions interest me specifically. I am currently drawn to the business aspects of corporate wholesale and buying. However, some of the marketing and corporate planning divisions are interesting as well. I would be able to help with media plans, fashion shows, launching online campaigns, etc.
All in all, my mind is still in a haze about what to do whenever I graduate:
If I should do something that pays well, or if I should do something that I love.
If I should I should stay in Texas,  New York or just be open to anywhere.

I totally was not prepared for the magnitude of this weekend’s snow storm. Snow was literally up to my knees on some street corners and it was near impossible to get a cab. I spent all yesterday recovering from a cold. I have a few more days left here before my brother and I head back to Texas so I’m going to try to make the best of it.

Slowing the Sand in the Hourglass

Last Friday was my sister’s graduation. After three-and-a-half years of hard work, she has finally graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine with a degree in Biomedical Science. Friday evening my family and I, along with thousands of other proud Aggie family members, filled Reed Arena. One of the first events of the ceremony was the induction of the graduating Aggies into the Association of Former Students. This was a wake-up call for me. In two-and-a-half years I am going to graduate and be in the real world.

Thanksgiving in Malaysia… the resolution

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

The next day I occupied myself at the Sarawak Cultural Village.  Amidst the various longhouses, head hunters, dance performances and curious families interested in this crazy white girl wandering around alone, I still had a decision to make- to continue exploring Sarawak or taking a pause to celebrate Thanksgiving, watching my favorite game of the year?

I spoke with my parents, and they encouraged me to check into a nice hotel, order whatever television package I needed to watch the game, and treat myself to American conveniences in celebration of Gratitude and Beating the Hell outta tu.  But this isn’t what I wanted; what I had in mind was this romantic idea of finding the only other Aggie in Sarawak, sharing this unique gameday experience or even embracing locals into my love for this game and this team.  To teach a team of Malaysians to Whoop, hump it, and maybe even to Saw Varsity’s Horns Off would be the pinnacle of my experience! What good is this ‘international experience’ if I am just sitting in a room alone? (more…)

Thanksgiving in Malaysia

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Oh no… I hope all week doesn’t look like this.

Gazing out the window of the A380 that had just landed in Kuching, I was greeted by a horrific down pour and hulk force winds.  I should have checked the weather report before I left.

Inspecting the ‘Cat City’ (Kuching is the Malay word for cat) from the window of the taxi, I had arrived with few expectations and one intention- to find a sports bar to watch the legendary Thanksgiving Football Game, Texas A&M vs. tu on Kyle Field. (more…)

Wantin’ Some More Wheaties

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

I’m not interested in losing hope or listing reasons why life is “so hard”, but this semester has been a lesson in taking the good with the bad—letting wheat and chaff grow side by side until the end, when all that remains is good.

“Wheat” has grown in the form of a boyfriend and roommates who care for me relentlessly.  My family remains supportive, my grades are better now than they have been since my first semester in college and I have had some unique opportunities to do things like interview a CEO, talk with campus leaders I admire and inspire at least a few people to dream deeper, wider dreams before making them 3D.  I got to be a teacher for a month.  I learned to produce a magazine.  I wrote the foreword to my all-time favorite teacher’s long-awaited book.  I have seen the fruits of love I invested years ago; some never know that feeling.  These things feed and fuel me. From Riches to Rags and Back

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Cold weather and Christmas carols let me know that another holiday is around the corner.  I am so excited to finish a semester of school, put the finishing touches on an issue of The Edge and curl up in my ugliest old t-shirts in front of the fireplace at home.

I’ve read more and written more this semester than any since probably 5th grade, when I first started keeping a diary and felt that I’d betrayed it every third minute I left it untouched.  There’s still a certain charm, for me, when I can scribble the most absurd of thoughts onto the pages of well, anything.  My mind is so inquisitive, still, like a child, asking, “Why? Why? Why?” until I’ve dizzied it into sleep.  Getting all of those, “Why?”s out on paper keeps me sane–keeps me from revisiting the same ten thousand questions every evening–keeps me wanting to learn something new instead of the same old lessons I recite to the world every day. It’s Snowing Outside, and Raining Inside?

Monday, December 7th, 2009

How would you act in an adverse situation? Would you worry about yourself, or those around you? Would you be angry, or just be happy that nobody was hurt? Nobody knows when an accident will happen, so it makes sense to have a plan of action, but how helpful are drills? (more…)

Thanksgiving: A Week of No Productivity

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Thanksgiving is the best and also the worst holiday ever.
It is the best because you it encourages great food, family, friends, team spirit and being thankful and blessed for everything you would normally take for granted.
