Tracts of gray, speckled with pink freckles and deep, heavy creases creating noticeable folds in the canvas, my eye wanders across this endless leathery space until my focus is caught by a deep-seated marble that captures my attention; the marble is looking back at me. Appreciating the fine details of the animal and then backing up to adore her in all of her majesty reminded me of the story I had heard when I was younger, about the three blind men trying to describe an elephant. One man had felt her trunk, comparing her to a snake; the other had felt her legs, comparing her to a tree, and the last one felt her ears, comparing her to a palm leaf. Sometimes things (elephants included) are just too big to take in all at once… and here I was, in the jungles of Laos, climbing to the top of one.

Interviews and I usually don’t get along. There is something about being stuck in a cramped room with a person who is bombarding you with questions that makes me feel like I’m on an episode of Law and Order. Before this semester, I’ve had a total of only three interviews in my life. Last week I had two interviews with accounting firms, so it was time to put my game face on.

Everyone in my family seems to always be on the go. With phone calls sometimes having to be scheduled in advanced, our best means of communication tends to be e-mail. Lately, it’s been a trend to send each other articles that we find interesting, somewhat inspirational and applicable to our lives.
My dad sent me one about Living in NYC on less than $30,000.
He thought it would inspire me because the girl in the article was “so creative” and was able to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world. (more…)

This summer I was blessed by being able to take the Marketing Study Abroad Program through Mays Business School. We traveled throughout Europe learning about local cultures, international business and the world we live in. This video blog documents our experience and gives you some insight into the adventures we had, the things we learned, and the relationships we formed.

I have something I have been keeping from most people.
It was something only my very closest friends knew about me for the first two years. It’s been going on for almost four years now, however, I have had to come clean slowly but surely as people began to get more curious as to my whereabouts for sometimes 20 hours a week… so, I am finally coming out of the closet…
I am a HelpLiner.

This is it boys and girls. The day we have been training for has finally arrived. Leave procrastination and relaxation behind. We won’t need them where we are going. There is no turning back. We are in too deep now. This is not a drill. I repeat: this is not a drill. Three weeks, three tests, seven interviews, two projects, and three quizzes. Need I say more? (more…)

I spent the first several days of spring break between Carlsbad Caverns and Seminole, Texas, where my boyfriend’s grandma lives. He and I made the west Texas drive–made up of mostly oil field views and cacti– on Friday night, then headed back to our hometown, just outside of Dallas, on Monday after breakfast. Getting to venture into the land of no cell phone coverage was a little daunting (mostly relaxing), yet nothing in comparison to what the first explorers must have felt when they explored the caverns, unlit and without conveniently installed handrails, for the first time. I can’t imagine…

Today I watched a movie called 2012. If you haven’t heard of the movie, it is based on Nostradamus’s prediction that the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. This prediction is based on the fact that the twenty-first is the last day on the Mayan calendar, and that 2012 marks an alignment of the planets and the Milky Way galaxy. In my opinion, December 21, 2012 is building up to be the “Y2K” of the new decade. (more…)

This past week has been the longest and most exhausting week for me. It seemed like every single test, quiz, project, paper, meeting, interview and etc. were all squeezed into one week.
The wait is over, it is finally Spring Break! I’m about to embark on a ‘typical’ collegiate spring break to Gulf Shores, Alabama.

My brain is on overdrive and my heart is fried. The past month has been a whirlwind of traveling to Mexico City and Boston, having an enormous project fall through, parting ways with what once thrilled me (then nearly killed me) and learning that, even when everything feels wrong, there are whispers of justice and beauty speaking through the chaos. My ears may still be popping from the plane rides, so I can’t always hear that quiet voice of everlasting truth, but I’m listening, hoping and waiting. (more…)
