PhD in Finance
Frequently Asked Questions
How many applications do you receive and how many openings
do you have?
The Department of Finance typically receives approximately 80-100
applications for approximately two to six openings
each year.
I have a 700 GMAT. Will I be accepted?
Just as there is no firm minimum GMAT score necessary
for acceptance, there is no high GMAT score that guarantees
acceptance. Regardless of an individual’s profile,
the department does not engage in pre-application screening.
The department encourages all prospective applicants
to read the admissions information and apply for admission.
What is the typical financial aid package (in monetary
terms) awarded to a PhD student in finance? Are there
earning opportunities for students in summer?
The base pay for all entering PhD students is $2,000 per month for ten months. There are limited opportunities to earn
11th and 12th month pay (at the same level as the 10th
month pay). There are also scholarships and fellowships ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 per year. These are awarded
based upon the qualifications and accomplishments of
the applicant.
Do applicants to the PhD in finance program need work
experience?
While work experience may be considered, the most important
factors are the applicant’s past academic performance,
statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and
GMAT/GRE scores.
Can I transfer from another program?
Ph.D. candidates from other programs will be considered
for acceptance, but are subject to the same application
procedures as general applicants. In addition, it is
not guaranteed that the applicant’s previous coursework
will count towards completion of the degree plan; each
credit transfer request will be evaluated on its own
merits.
Do you accept applications for the Spring or Summer
semester?
No. Due the structured nature of our first- and second-year
curriculum, we accept applications for Fall semesters
only.
I am an international student but I already have a degree from a US School or I can show alternative proof of proficiency in English. Do I need to take the TOEFL?
We can review your application and make a decision without a TEOFL score on file. However, if you are admitted to the program, university regulations may require you to take the TOEFL in the first year here.
My GMAT/GRE score is really old. Do I have to take it again?
We can review applications and make decisions based on GMAT/GRE scores that are less than ten years old. However, if you are admitted to the program, university regulations may require that you re-take the GMAT/GRE in the first year here, if your score is older than five years.
Do I need to send the official GMAT/GRE scores directly from ETS to Texas A&M? If so, what is Texas A&M’s code?
You do not need to send official scores with your application. Self reported scores are acceptable in the initial review stage. If your application is approved, you will be asked to send official scores at that time.
Do I need to mail in transcripts?
Do not mail official transcripts at this time as it will delay the processing of your application. Official transcript(s) will be required if admission is offered.
Do I need to mail in the application after completing it online?
Do not mail a printed copy of your completed application or your application fee receipt.
