Forcing Policy

  1. Marketing department advisors can only consider forces for marketing classes.  Forces for courses from other departments (for example, Management or English) must be addressed with the advisors for those departments.
  2. To apply for a force into a marketing class, you must complete the “Force Request” form (the pink sheet) and return it to a marketing advisor during the forcing period (see #5 below).
  3. Force requests will be queued in the following order when they are considered:
    1. Graduating seniors have top priority.  Graduating status will be determined by marketing department advisors via a review of remaining degree requirements on your degree audit.
    2. Students pursuing a Certificate in Retailing who need a specific marketing course to complete the certificate.
    3. Non-graduating marketing majors who have a direct time conflict with another required course (when the conflicting course does not have an alternate section).
    4. Non-marketing business majors who have a direct time conflict with another required course (when the conflicting course does not have an alternate section).
    5. Students pursuing a business minor and seeking admission to MKTG309 will be prioritized by graduation date.
    6. Students who have a work schedule conflict with a marketing class.  While we understand the reality that many students must work during their university career, the marketing department expects that academic classes will remain the top priority for students.  Work schedule considerations are the lowest priority consideration for forces and will only be granted when space permits.
  4. The following issues are not appropriate considerations for forcing a class.
    1. A more convenient class time.  Yes, we understand that not everyone enjoys 8:00 AM classes, but early (or late) classes are a necessity of the university environment.
    2. Preference for a specific instructor.
  5. The Forcing Dates—Force forms for Summer and Fall 2008 will be accepted from April 10-25.  Forces will be processed on April 27.  Check the registration system to see your updated schedule.
