Biography
Dr. Ryan Zimmerman teaches and conducts research in the area of human resource management. His research interests include employee selection and retention, individual differences (e.g. personality and general mental ability), person-environment fit, and meta-analysis. Dr. Zimmerman has had his research published in journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Human Resource Management, Human Performance, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Personality and Individual Differences, Corporate Reputation Review, and Personnel Review.
He is a recipient, along with two co-authors, of the Academy of Management Human Resources Division's 2006 Scholarly Achievement Award for the most significant paper in human resource management. This article ("Consequences of individuals' fit at work: A meta-analysis of person-job, person-organization, person-group, and person-supervisor fit") is currently the most frequently cited article in the fields of human resource management and organizational behavior published since 2003. Dr. Zimmerman has been awarded funding on multiple occasions from the Center for Human Resource Management to study motivational causes of employee turnover. In 2010, he received a Mays Business School Teaching Award.
Dr. Zimmerman is the director of Texas A&M University's Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MS-HRM) program and the secondary faculty advisor for the Texas A&M student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Vocational Behavior. He is also an ad-hoc reviewer for Psychological Bulletin, Psychological Review, Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Research Methods, Human Resource Management, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, as well as several other journals.
Dr. Zimmerman is a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Personnel/Human Resource Research Group. He currently serves on the Executive Committee for the HR Division of the Academy of Management.
Prior to earning his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, Dr. Zimmerman worked as a manager, HR specialist, and internal HR consultant.
