Biography
Dr. Abelson has been actively involved in all facets of education since joining the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1981. He has taught at the undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and executive levels. He is recipient of the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M University Distinguished Teaching Award for the College of Business Administration. He is also recipient of the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M University Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching (1992). In addition, he was the first coordinator of the Department of Management's Master of Science in Personnel and Human Resource Management. From 1992 to 1997 he took a leadership role in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Texas A&M University designing a unique team building experience for first year MBAs. Dr. Abelson also instructed the MBA students in the organizations course offered the first semester that prepared students to lead, manage others, and deal with complex issues and change within today and tomorrow's complex organizations.Dr. Abelson is actively involved in consulting and executive education. He has combined his clinical psychology and management skills when offering dozens of seminars, team building or culture-shift workshops annually. He does consulting and executive development for a diverse clientele. He has also been a frequent instructor for programs offered by organizations such as the Texas A&M University Center for Executive Development and the Texas A&M University Center for Construction Education. His areas of expertise include implementing and managing change, effective leadership, power, motivation, empowerment, conflict management, interpersonal relations, and team building.
His research includes over 50 articles, book chapters, and one book on managing and implementing change, leadership, goal setting, organizational culture/climate, employee loyalty, sales staff performance, movement through the employee turnover process, and future trends. These appear in publications such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Human Relations. His management advice has appeared in numerous Fortune Magazineand over 100 newspapers across the country.
