Résumé/interview tips
Callie Schleider, Career Coordinator of Mays Business School, is an excellent source for résumé writing and interviewing. She is located in 238 Wehner (the Undergraduate Programs Office) and holds walk-in hours throughout the semester to look over your résumé, help you with interviewing, etc.
You can also look on the TAMU Career Center’s website for available résumé writing and interviewing workshops.
Here are a few important résumé pointers (provided by former Mays Career Coordinator Jodee Bailey):
Do:
- Keep your résumé to ONLY ONE PAGE
- QUANTIFY as much as possible (the number of people you supervise, how much money you raised, how much money is in the budget you supervise, etc.)
- Use strong and descriptive action verbs
- Focus on the results of your experiences
- Pay attention to grammar, spelling and clarity/neatness
- Use formatting to assist with clarity (bold, italics, underline, indent)
- Be straight forward and complementary to yourself
- Always include your GPR, they will think the worst if it is not there
- Make sure your résumé is up-to-date
Don't:
- Do not use personal pronouns (I, me, my)
- Do not include a lot of high school information
- Do not use a font smaller than 11 pt.
- Do not list a lot of activities that you were only partially involved in
- Do not leave too much white space
- Do not include graphics or colored text
- Do not include a picture or personal information (height, weight, marital status, etc.)
- Do not include references on your résumé. Instead, have a separate sheet available with your name at the top in the same font and formatting as your résumé.
