Abstract
The link between system structure and dynamic behavior is one of the defining elements in the system dynamics paradigm, yet it is only recently that systematic, mathematically rigorous methods for exploring this link have started to become available. These analytical tools are important to the practitioner because the structure-behavior link is the key to finding leverage points for policy initiatives. And they are important to the theorist because a system dynamics theory of a particular phenomenon is an account of how certain feedback loops cause certain dynamic patterns of behavior to appear. This article reviews the recent advances in analytical tools based on linear systems theory and discusses its future potential for the both the system dynamics practitioner and the theorist.
