CPA Requirements

The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) and other jurisdictions require that Certified Public Accountant (CPA) candidates have between 120 to 150 credit hours of college coursework for licensure, along with specific rules related to Accounting coursework. Students who complete only our Accounting BBA degree plan may need to take additional Accounting coursework in order to become a licensed CPA. Students receive academic advising that helps them navigate CPA eligibility as it applies to their individual situation and goals.

The James Benjamin Department of Accounting offers TSBPA-approved coursework in our BBA degree, Certificates, and Master’s programs to assist for you to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam and licensure. Our students consistently outperform the national average pass rates on the CPA exam due to our intentional curriculum, partnership with Becker Professional Education, and individualized advising. Learn about your options by talking to an Accounting academic advisor.

Please note: While our program provides the educational requirements to pursue CPA licensure, becoming a CPA is not mandatory for employment as an accountant. Many accounting positions do not require CPA certification.
