Bala Shetty

Dr. Bala Shetty is the Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M University and holds the Cullen Trust for Higher Education Chair in Business. A member of the Texas A&M faculty since 1985, he has also held academic appointments at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Madrid Business School in Spain. Dr. Shetty has served as a Research Fellow at Princeton University in 1996, 2008, 2016, and 2023, and held a courtesy appointment as Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the Dwight Look College of Engineering from 2017 to 2022.

At Mays Business School, Dr. Shetty has held several key leadership roles. From 1998 to 2004, he served as Ph.D. Director, Assistant Department Head, and Head of Information and Operations Management. He later led the school’s graduate programs as Associate Dean (2004–2008 and 2015–2016), overseeing the Full-Time MBA, Professional MBA, Executive MBA, and eight specialized master’s programs. From 2008 to 2015, he served as Executive Associate Dean, providing school-wide leadership across faculty and staff development, budgeting, facilities, IT, research centers, and doctoral programs.

A passionate educator, Dr. Shetty is dedicated to helping his students develop the knowledge and perspective needed to succeed personally and professionally. His teaching excellence has been recognized through numerous awards, including six Full-Time MBA, five Professional MBA, five Executive MBA, and two undergraduate teaching awards. He is also a recipient of the Association of Former Students Teaching Award at both the college (2002) and university (2016) levels. Earlier in his career, he received SMU’s university-wide Outstanding Professor Award, and in 2023, he was nationally recognized with the Wickham Skinner Teaching Innovation Award from the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). In 2023, he awas also designated as the Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence, an honor bestowed each year on two faculty at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Shetty’s research interests include supply chain management, optimization, and finance. His work has been widely published in leading journals in operations research, information systems, and operations management. He has served as associate editor for Operations Research, Decision Sciences, and Naval Research Logistics, and twice as guest editor for the Annals of Operations Research. He is currently a Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management. Dr. Shetty has also served as Vice President for Education and Vice President for Membership of the Production and Operations Management Society and is a recipient of the Mays Research Excellence Award.
