Biography

Dr. Bala Shetty is Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M University and holds the Cullen Trust for Higher Education Chair in Business. In addition to serving on the faculty of Texas A&M University since 1985, he held faculty positions at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Madrid Business School in Spain. Dr. Shetty served as a Research Fellow at Princeton University in 1996, 2008, 2016, and 2023 while on leave from Texas A&M University. He had also held a courtesy appointment as Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering with the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University from 2017 to 2022.

Dr. Shetty held several senior leadership roles at Mays Business School. From 1998-2004, he served as Ph.D. Director, Assistant Department Head, and Head of the Department of Information and Operations Management. From 2004-2008, and again from 2015-2016, he served as Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, leading the School’s Full-Time MBA, Professional MBA, Executive MBA and 8 MS programs. From 2008-2015, he served as Executive Associate Dean for Mays Business School with school-wide leadership responsibilities for faculty, staff, budget, facilities, IT, centers of excellence, research, and doctoral program.

Dr. Shetty is passionate about providing his students with an outstanding education that will impact their personal and professional lives. He often says with pride, “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with so many bright young men and women who will be the next generation of leaders of this country.” Dr. Shetty has received a number of teaching awards at Texas A&M University and Southern Methodist University which speak volumes of his success as a teacher. Dr. Shetty has received the EMBA Outstanding Faculty Award (2008, 2014, 2017, 2021), PMBA Outstanding Faculty Award (2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2023), MBA Outstanding Faculty Award (1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2019), Alpha Kappa Psi Undergraduate Teaching Award (1990, 1991), and the prestigious Association of Former Students Teaching Award at the college level (2002) and the university level (2016). At SMU, Professor Shetty was recognized with Outstanding Professor, a university-wide award for excellence in teaching. More recently, Dr. Shetty was one of the two recipients nationally of the POMS Wickham Skinner Teaching Excellence award.

Dr. Shetty’s research interests include supply chain management, optimization, and finance. He has published extensively in such premier and highly respected journals as Operations Research, Information Systems Research, Production and Operations Management Journal, INFORMS Journal on Computing, Mathematical Programming, IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Naval Research Logistics, International Journal of Production Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Networks, OR Letters, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Operational Research, Computers and IE, Applied Mathematics and Computation, and Computers and Operations Research. He served as associate editor for Operations Research, Decision Sciences, and Naval Research Logistics. He has also served twice as a guest editor for the Annals of Operations Research. He is currently a Senior Editor for the Production and Operations Management Journal. Dr. Shetty is the recipient of the Distinguished Research Award at Mays Business School.

Dr. Shetty served as Chair of the Job Placement Services for INFORMS for two terms and served on INFORMS’ Finance Committee and Awards Committee. He has served as Track Chair, Panel Chair, and Session Chair at numerous national and international meetings of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), and Decision Sciences Institute (DSI). More recently, Dr. Shetty served as Vice President (Education) and Associate Vice President (Sponsorship) for his professional academy (POMS). He is currently serves as Vice President for Membership for POMS.
