Biography

Rajiv Mukherjee received his PhD in Information Systems from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the faculty at Mays Business School, Rajiv served on the faculty of Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. He also has a MS in electrical engineering specializing in authentication systems design and development from the West Virginia University, and a BE in electronics and telecommunication engineering from the University of Pune, India.

Rajiv’s research agenda is driven by the challenges faced by a firm that undergoes transformation from a product-based business to a platform business model which caters to multiple sides of the market. He examines digital platform design, innovation and pricing strategies for platforms using methodologies that include quantitative modeling, experiment design and machine learning. More specifically, Rajiv has studied the role of authentication in matching markets (e.g., dating and labor markets), impact of consumer’s adoption behavior (e.g., multihoming) in the presence of competing platforms, information economics of platforms preannouncements, and the role of consumer behavior on subscription pricing in platform settings.

Rajiv shares his research with the academic community through several conferences such as Theory of Economics and Information Systems (TEIS), Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE), Conference on Information Systems and Technology (CIST), Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) and International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS). His research on the strategic role of information in two-sided markets was a runner up at the Informs e-business best paper award and his work on multihoming platforms was nominated for Best Paper award at ICIS. Rajiv has chaired several sessions at the Informs and POMS annual conferences. He regularly reviews research papers at top academic journals including Management Science, Management Information Systems Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Production and Operation Management Society.

Rajiv brings his research insights to his teaching as well. He has taught tool, techniques, and strategies to leverage web and social media data to drive analytics, to Masters (MBA, MS) and Undergraduate students. At McCombs, he received an outstanding teaching award and BBA Honor Roll.

Before entering academia, Rajiv has spent quality time in the industry and has researched, designed, and developed embedded systems for telecommunication (e.g., video compression algorithms) and biometrics authentication (e.g., iris, face, and fingerprint recognition). His research has found home in premier venues such as Management Science and Management of Information Systems Quarterly and has been covered by leading media outlets such as Forbes.
