Biography

Dr. Mukherjee received his PhD in Information Systems from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the faculty at Mays Business School, Dr. Mukherjee served on the faculty of Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.

Dr. Mukherjee’s research agenda is driven by the challenges faced by a firm that undergoes transformation from a product-based business to a platform business model which caters to multiple sides of the market. He examines digital platform design, innovation and pricing strategies for platforms using methodologies that include quantitative modeling, experiment design and machine learning. More specifically, Dr. Mukherjee has studied the role of authentication in matching markets (e.g., dating and labor markets), impact of consumer’s adoption behavior (e.g., multihoming) in the presence of competing platforms, information economics of platforms preannouncements, the role of consumer behavior on subscription pricing in platform settings, demand management under congestion, platform piracy, and leveraging social media for predictions in the automobile and the healthcare industry. All his research has a focus on societal impact.

Dr. Mukherjee’s research on the strategic role of information in two-sided markets, and on congestion pricing were both runners up at the Informs e-business best paper award and his work on multihoming platforms was nominated for Best Paper award at ICIS. Dr. Mukherjee has chaired several sessions at the Informs and POMS annual conferences. He regularly reviews research papers at top academic journals including Management Science, Management Information Systems Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Production and Operation Management Society.

Dr. Mukherjee brings research insights into his teaching as well. He has taught tools, techniques, and strategies to leverage web and social media data to drive analytics, to Masters (MBA, MS) and Undergraduate students. At McCombs, he received an outstanding teaching award and BBA Honor Roll. At Mays, he was awarded the Aaron Becker Memorial Award for outstanding teaching at the graduate level in 2021.

Before entering academia, Dr. Mukherjee has spent quality time in the industry and has researched, designed, and developed embedded systems for telecommunication (e.g., video compression algorithms) and AI driven biometrics authentication (e.g., iris, face, and fingerprint recognition). His research has found home in premier venues such as Management Science, Management of Information Systems Quarterly and Journal of Association of Information Systems. His research has been covered by leading media outlets such as Forbes and appeared in practitioner outlets such as Management and Business Review.
