Biography

Dr. Shannon Deer, ’03, CPA, is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and a Clinical Associate Professor. Dr. Deer has brought her passion for student development and a helping students discover their passions in many previous roles across the college since 2006, including as the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs, Director of the Full-Time MBA program, and Assistant Department Head in the Department of Accounting.
Before her academic career, Dr. Deer worked in public accounting, serving large SEC filers and private companies primarily in the energy space. She has maintained her connection with corporations through consulting and executive development teaching.
Dr. Deer’s research focuses on corporate social responsibility and the intersection of business and social challenges. She explores how businesses can use human resource development tools to invest in women, creating positive impacts on businesses, communities, and families. Her book, “Business Doing Good: Engaging Women and Elevating Communities,” outlines six principles for hiring women who have experienced incarceration, poverty, addiction, or engagement in the sex trade. This work has been featured across various media platforms, including NBC News Now, People.com, Yahoo News, Thrive Global, and numerous podcasts.
Dr. Deer’s corporate experience and research creates a unique intersection of experiences that position her to support companies in their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.
Dr. Deer is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Association of Former Students Distinguished Teaching Award, the Ernst & Young Teaching Excellence Award, and the Baggett Teaching Award. She was honored to serve as a Fish Camp namesake in the summer of 2013, a freshman orientation camp.
She holds a BBA in Accounting, an MS in Finance, and a Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Development, all from Texas A&M University. Her Aggie claim to fame is that she and her husband got married on Kyle Field!
