Biography

Dr. Shannon Deer, CPA is the associate dean for undergraduate programs at Texas A&M’s Mays Business School and a clinical associate professor. Dr. Deer has served in many roles across Mays Business School, most recently as the assistant dean of graduate programs and the director of the Full-Time MBA program. Prior to that, Dr. Deer was the assistant department head and instructor in the Department of Accounting at Mays for almost 10 years. Dr. Deer returned to Texas A&M to teach after working in public accounting. During her time in public accounting, Dr. Deer served large SEC filers as well as large private exploration and production companies. She has maintained a connection with practice through outside consulting and teaching executive development.

Dr. Deer’s work emphasizes the importance of corporate social responsibility along with the intersection of business and solutions to social challenges. Specifically, she explores ways businesses can leverage human resource development tools to invest in women to positively impact the business, community, and individual families. Her upcoming book – Business Doing Good: Engaging Women and Elevating Communities – outlines six principles business leaders can implement to effectively hire women who have experienced incarceration, poverty, addiction, and/or engagement in the sex trade. While making a difference to both these women and communities, businesses benefit from the women’s resourcefulness, resilience, ability to motivate, and other unique skills and perspectives only available to someone who has overcome difficulties.
Dr. Deer’s career has also focused on the energy industry from multiple perspectives – accounting, finance, and sustainability. The intersection of her experiences positions her well to support companies in their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts as well as profit focus.

Dr. Deer is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Association of Former Students Distinguished Teaching Award, the Ernst & Young Teaching Excellence Award, and the Baggett Teaching Award. Dr. Deer was honored to serve as a Fish Camp namesake in the summer of 2013 (a freshman orientation camp).

Dr. Deer received her BBA Accounting, MS Finance, and Ph.D. Education and Human Resource Development all from Texas A&M University.
