Biography
Karen Congo Farmer, CPA (Canada) is a senior lecturer at Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, who teaches two undergraduate courses: Cost Accounting, and Managerial and Cost Accounting Principles, and three masters-level courses: Accounting for Managerial Decisions, Ethical Decision-Making, and Energy Accounting. For the majority of her 15 of her full-time teaching years at Mays, Karen was also the controller for a consulting firm in Cypress, Texas.
Upon completing her Hons B. Comm. Degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Karen became a CPA and worked in assurance services at Ernst & Young, LLP before transitioning to accounting and academic roles respectively, at Western University, in London, Ontario, Canada. Leveraging industry and academic experience, Karen taught professional accounting students for ten years through CPA Ontario’s rigorous programs.
Karen is the author of the innovative textbook Cost Accounting: With Integrated Data Analytics, 2022, (Wiley) which has been adopted by colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Karen’s engaging public speaking skills have been honed by her many presentations at the American Accounting Association, the Conference for Teaching and Learning Accounting, the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum conference, TACTYC, the Canadian Academic Accounting Association, and in delivering webinars for Wiley.
Karen is a winner of the prestigious 2021-2022 Provost Academic Professional Track Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, a university-level honor, which recognizes extraordinary accomplishments in teaching innovation, curriculum and professional development, and student service. Karen was also the recipient of the 2018 and 2013 Baggett Teaching Award from the James Benjamin Department of Accounting which recognizes similar accomplishments.
