Michael Scialdone

Biography

I am a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Information and Operations Management who is deeply passionate about being an educator. I strive to ensure my students succeed both in and out of the classroom by being well-equipped with the proper tools, knowledge, ideas, and approaches to tackle real-world problems. I’m also a champion for diversity, and actively seek to incorporate diverse perspectives and voices in the classroom through discussions, activities, and assignments that allow students to reflect on their personal experiences, identity, and interests.

My research, meanwhile, looks at how specific characteristics of technologies (which some might refer to as features, affordances, or constraints) impact communication, interaction, and other behaviors between actors across business, educational, and social contexts. Additional academic interests include Information Systems pedagogy, and Human-Computer Interaction research and evaluative methods. My work has been published in journals including the Association for Information Systems Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction and Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology; and I have presented at venues including the International Conference on Information Systems, EDSIG Conference on Information Systems & Computing Education, the Academy of Management Annual Meeting, and iConference.

I earned my Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology from Syracuse University, my M.S. in Information Design and Technology from the State University of New York Institute of Technology (now known as SUNY Polytechnic Institute), and my B.A. in Communication Arts from Utica College. I previously held academic appointments as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the State University of New York at Fredonia, a part-time instructor at Trident University International, and an adjunct instructor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. I also have 6+ years of industry experience including being a business systems analyst for MetLife Disability, and a manager for Circuit City Stores, INC.

Outside of academia, I have a multitude of creative hobbies and interests. I consider myself an amateur photographer, a mediocre cartoonist, an occasional radio-show host, a (slow, but active) runner, and an avid cat enthusiast.
