Students Helping Our Community
Who We Are
Students Helping Our Community (SHOC) is a Recognized Texas A&M Student Organization dedicated to giving back to the community and assisting local charities. This is accomplished through community service projects and fundraising events. SHOC provides students an exciting opportunity to give back to the community, deepen friendships within the MBA program, create lasting memories outside of the classroom, and make the community a place where charity abounds.
What We Do
- The Big Event – Founded at Texas A&M, The Big Event is the largest student-run community service project in the country. MBA SHOC organizes a team to complete “Job Requests” for local vendors and residents. It’s a fun and effective way for the students to show their appreciation for Bryan/College Station!
- Prison Entrepreneurship Program – (PEP) is a Houston-based nonprofit organization. This rewarding program connects top executives, entrepreneurs, and MBA students with convicted felons. Participants provide business plan guidance to prisoners and are even permitted to visit the correctional center on several occasions.
- MBA Follies – MBA Follies is SHOC’s annual fundraiser for the Family Support Network (FSN). The Family Support Network organizes Camp LIFE, a summer camp for disabled children. Follies is a chance for students to show off their talents on stage, participate in a silent auction, and bid on special events sponsored by their Professors. All money raised goes to provide scholarships for children that would otherwise be unable to attend Camp LIFE. SHOC also volunteers at Camp LIFE events.
- Relay for Life – Relay for Life creates cancer awareness and raises money for cancer research. SHOC pays for a relay team, and SHOC members participate in the overnight relay race.
