Describe your career and what led you to your current position. Working at National Stock Exchange for 3 years as a Software Developer I was able to apply my technical knowledge in practice and gain invaluable experience. I enjoyed solving complex business problems by developing applications and see the impact of my work. Gaining business knowledge to implement projects led me to develop interest in the non-technical side of projects which is why I decided on pursuing a Master’s in MIS. I want to start my career at Amazon honing my technical skills and then transition to a managerial role with the help of my Master’s degree.

What were your job responsibilities in your internship? How did the MS-MIS program prepare you for this position? I interned at Zurich North America as a Software Engineer developing applications, automating existing processes and performing Proof of Concepts of various Azure technologies for integration with the existing Underwriting Management platform. Studying concepts from ISTM 622 – Adv Data Management and ISTM 630 – Project Management allowed me to easily translate my learning to practical experiences in SQL and Agile respectively.

What was your favorite course at A&M? My favorite MS-MIS course was ISTM 630 – MIS PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION as I was able to don the hat of a Project Manager in a scenario similar to a real-world setting. As a group, we created various project documents and carefully managed the balance between time, scope and cost. It was amazing to collaborate and present a final draft demonstrating a detailed plan to accomplish the required project features.

What was the most beneficial course you took at A&M? The most beneficial course I took at A&M has to be ISTM 622 – ADVANCED DATABASE MANAGEMENT. The way the course was structured with its practical applications was superb, and I gained tremendous knowledge on databases. It is a hands-on course and you get to learn and implement various features of SQL and NoSQL databases.

Why did you pursue a Master’s degree?  I have always had the dream of attaining a Master’s degree and add an additional degree to my educational background. Pursuing a Master’s degree in MIS has meant that I was able to continue to develop my technical background while adding business and managerial acumen. I always wanted to learn how technology and business work in tandem and how I can work in a profession where I have access to both worlds. Thus, pursuing an MS-MIS degree from Mays Business School was the most logical next step in my career.

What advice do you have for someone who is considering returning to school to earn a master’s degree? For someone who is returning to school, my biggest advice would be to work hard and explore new avenues in the program you decide to pursue. Do something you would like to explore or something which you love as that will help you widen your perspective.

What is the biggest challenge you faced in graduate school? The biggest challenge was time management and balancing my academics, job hunt and extra-curricular activities. I enjoy sports and would ensure that I would make time for physical activities, as that helps me rejuvenate and refresh my thoughts from academics.

What is the biggest reward for earning your MS-MIS degree at Texas A&M? Apart from the prestigious MS-MIS degree you will attain from A&M, I would say the biggest reward you will gain is personality development. Working and collaborating with people from various backgrounds helped me gain confidence and immense knowledge. Another reward which you will attain is that you will become an Aggie forever and the traditions at A&M will be etched in your memory lifelong.
