Michael A. Hitt

Biography

Michael A. Hitt is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. Michael received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. He has co-authored or co-edited many books and published multiple articles in the top scholarly journals in the field. A recent article listed him as one of the ten most-cited authors in management over a 25-year period. The Times Higher Education listed him among the top scholars in economics, finance, and management based on the number of highly cited articles he has authored. Another article in the Academy of Management Perspectives lists him as one of the top two management scholars in terms of the combined impact of his work both inside (i.e., citations in scholarly journals) and outside of academia. Recently, Research.com listed him as the third highest ranked Business and Management scientist in the world based on the H-index of his published research. He is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal, a former co-editor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal a former editor-in-chief of Oxford Research Encyclopedia-Business and Management. He is a Fellow in the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, and in the Academy of International Business. He has received honorary doctorates from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Jonkoping University. He is a former President of both the Academy of Management and of the Strategic Management Society. He received awards for the best article published in the Academy of Management Executive (1999), Academy of Management Journal (2000), the Journal of Management (2006), and the Family Business Review (2012). In 2021, he received the Ambassador Award from the Journal of Operations Management for his 2016 article published in that journal. He has received the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the BPS Division along with the Outstanding Service Award and the Outstanding Educator Award from the Academy of Management. Dr. Hitt has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in the Web of Science (top 2 percent in citations) for multiple years and in 2023 received the Lifetime Influence and Impact Award from the Family Enterprise Research Conference.
