Students studying together

Department of Information and Operations Management

The Department of Information and Operations Management deals with the use of information technologies in businesses and organizations. With the ever-changing technologies today, organizations will flourish and succeed only if they make use of, design, and implement effective information systems to meet the organization's tactical and strategic needs. Due to the rapidly changing technical environment of the world, the information technology specialists are approached with the challenge of adapting and learning as these changes occur. INFO majors must possess a thorough understanding of information technology and also the knowledge to use that technology to support core business functions of an organization.

Students are required to take a set of courses that emphasize technical knowledge such as computer programming and database management as well as courses that consider how to manage the development and use of information technology in organizations.

The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management ranks among the top departments in the world in terms of research productivity, impact, and visibility. The department includes faculties in supply chain management and management information systems. In addition to our PhD program in supply chain management and MS-MIS programs, the department makes on-going contributions to Mays’ undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA programs. Several of our faculty members serve as associate editors or senior editors with leading journals such as Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences and others. Our faculty has received best paper awards, best associate editor, and best reviewer awards from a variety of leading journals and has assumed leadership in academic societies such as the INFORMS, Production & Operations Management Society, Systems Dynamics Society, and the Decision Sciences Institute. Professors from our department consistently receive teaching awards at the college and university levels.

The Center for the Management of Information Systems is an integral part of the department and provides a competitive advantage to its student, faculty, and industry members by facilitating an active partnership with robust, relevant educational opportunities, research support and corporate access.
